We are one of 24 universities from 112 applicants to have secured funding from the Government, enabling us to introduce a defence-technology pathway for UK students across five of our degree programmes.
The defence-focused pathways will be embedded within our existing BEng Civil, Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering, and BSc Computer Science programmes, with close interdisciplinary coordination between the departments. All current accreditations will be maintained.
The Government funding supports an increase in student capacity and the recruitment of new academic staff, laboratory demonstrators, and technical specialists. It also allows us to adapt and enhance our teaching and research infrastructure.
Participation in the pathways will be entirely down to student choice. Students who choose this route will engage with defence technology professionals through such activities as guest lectures, careers events, placements, and internship opportunities. They will be equipped with the skills needed for a career in the defence sector.
Establishing this degree pathway is an important part of our ongoing activity in support of the strategic imperative to boost the pipeline of defence-related and technical skilled workers who can contribute to the UK’s national security.
We look forward to welcoming the first cohort of students onto this pathway at the start of the 2026/27 academic year.
