What is Environmental Science?

Environmental science is about understanding our planet and finding ways to look after it.

Environmental science technicians are like detectives for planet Earth. They work outdoors, in laboratories and in lots of other places, using science and technology to investigate the world around us.

A technician might collect water from a river to check how clean it is, examine soil to see what is living in it, monitor the air for pollution, record changes in wildlife, use equipment to study the weather, or test materials to find out what happens to them in the environment.

They use specialist tools, scientific equipment, computers and practical skills to collect information, carry out tests and help solve environmental problems.

What could you investigate?

You could explore questions such as:

  • Why are some rivers cleaner than others?
  • What creatures live in a pond or woodland?
  • How can we measure air pollution?
  • What happens to our rubbish after we throw it away?
  • How can we protect animals and their habitats?
  • How can technology help us understand changes to our planet?

Environmental science isn’t just about learning about the planet. It’s about getting hands-on, investigating problems and helping to make a difference.

And technicians are a really important part of making that happen.

Could you be an environmental science technician?
