Professor Salome Bukachi

Professor Salome Bukachi is a social/ medical anthropologist with 25+ years of experience in infectious diseases, specialising in community practices, One Health, gender, and nutrition anthropology, and skilled in cultural aspects of food systems, health systems, and socio-economic and behavioural dimensions of disease and development. She holds a PhD in Anthropology, and she lectures Anthropology at the University of Nairobi.   She has supervised over 50 postgraduate students and has published over 70 manuscripts in peer reviewed journals.

Professor Bukachi also works with various stakeholders both local and international in undertaking research and development on anthropological issues and one health. She is a member of several regional and global initiatives including the Africa One Health Network Steering Committee, One Health High Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP); The LANCET- PPATS Commission on Prevention of Viral Spillover at Source; Capacitating One Health in Eastern and Southern Africa (COHESA); a scientific advisory board member of the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance';  a board member of the International Association of Ecology and Health; former member of the Global Advisory Panel (GAP) for the REACH Programme – Improving Water Security for the Poor;  and a temporary adviser to the WHO on Gender and intersectionality on infectious diseases of poverty.

Professor Bukachi has won several research grants and fellowships from organisations and institutions such as the Government of Kenya, the EU, IDRC, BMGF, SNSF, the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and the Netherlands Fellowship Program. She is a former fellow of the inaugural Fellowship Programme in the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform and an alumni fellow (2019) of the African Oxford Initiative.  

Professor Bukachi has mentored many African anthropologists and has created a niche in the emerging field of Anthropology of infectious diseases including One Health. She is a founding member of the ISTQB Kenya Board and a member of the Academic Committee of the international ISTQB.
