Call for Research Development Projects - 2025/26
The Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) is a home for growing big ideas. We support a broad and inclusive interdisciplinary community from across the full spectrum of Durham academics, where different perspectives are brought together to develop creative approaches to interesting and important problems.
What funding can be used for
In addition to funding large scale projects, we fund IAS Research Development Projects (RDPs) which support the early-stage development of ambitious interdisciplinary research ideas and projects that have the potential to develop into future IAS major projects and/or external funding. Funding of up to £1500 is available and can be used to support, for example, research conversations, workshops, and network building.
The £1500 can, for example, be used to support costs to fund short visits of external visitors to Durham (travel and accommodation); to fund the hosting of conferences and workshops (travel and accommodation for key participants); or to fund short visits for Durham research staff to visit other key researchers.
How to apply
The lead applicant must be an employed member of Durham University staff. The online application form (available here) includes full guidance.
Successful applicants will be invited to become Associate Fellows of the IAS, and will have access to the facilities and resources of the IAS in Cosin's Hall, such as the IAS seminar room and meeting room for holding events, the IAS common room, and hot-desking facilities (if available). In addition, if funding is to support Visiting Scholars and they are outside of Michaelmas and Epiphany terms, there may also be potential to offer office space to them.
Deadline
The application deadline is midday Thursday 08 May 2025, and the outcome will be communicated w/e 23 May 2025.
