Uganda Workshop CSDLP

Supported by EPSRC Impact Funding, the JusTN0W Initiative recently held a workshop in Uganda with key national partners to support best practice in the preparation and development of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The event brought together representatives from government ministries and national energy institutions to discuss Uganda’s next steps under the UNFCCC and the development of its NDC 3.0.

A very warm welcome awaited Professor Petra Minnerop and Dr Adebola Adeyemi for the delivery of a workshop in Uganda last week. As part of our long-standing collaboration, representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the Ministry of Water and Environment (Climate Change Department), Uganda National Oil Company and the Petroleum Authority of Uganda met with the CSDLP team to discuss next steps in the development of Uganda’s commitments under the UNFCCC, including NDC revision and development of the NDC 3.0, transition planning, and capacity-building priorities.
Key outcomes built on our prior analysis of NDCs and international best practices, particularly regarding the integration of the energy and oil and gas sectors, the definition of baselines, and the embedding of transition plans within national climate commitments.
An important part of the discussion focused on our new AI prototype, part of JusTN0W project activity and designed to operate without cloud-based systems, thereby reducing energy consumption. The tool offers the potential to analyse national climate policy planning while safeguarding data privacy and addressing national security considerations.
We were delighted to include contributions from JusTN0W team members - Dr Nelly Bencomo, Prof Ashraf Osman, Dr Chien-Yi Chang, Dr Sheersh Kaushik, and Dr Owen Boyle - who joined the discussion remotely from Durham University.
Despite travel disruptions due to regional airspace closures, the visit concluded with a clear and concrete action plan. We look forward to continuing our work with the ministries and the PAU in the months ahead.

JusTN0W and CSDLP will continue to develop our CPD and consultancy offer to support countries in meeting ongoing reporting requirements under the Paris Agreement.
