Durham University has released a new report reviewing its engagement at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, and outlining priorities for the year ahead in international climate policy, research and impact.
The report, COP30 and the Year Ahead, provides an integrated account of Durham’s role across the negotiations and situates the University’s work within wider developments under the UNFCCC process.
COP30, hosted in the Brazilian Amazon and marking ten years since the Paris Agreement, took place amid growing urgency to accelerate climate action. The report reflects on the outcomes of the conference, including progress on climate finance, implementation pathways aligned with 1.5°C, and the implications of emerging scientific and legal developments for future negotiations. It highlights how Durham University’s expertise across law, science, economics and human rights was mobilised to support evidence-informed dialogue throughout the conference.
The report captures the breadth of Durham’s engagement, from contributions to official UN processes and scientific initiatives to participation in closed policy discussions and international academic coordination. It also documents the launch of the Durham Declaration on Climate Change and Sustainability, positioning higher education institutions as key actors in advancing climate resilience and just transitions.
Looking ahead, the report sets out Durham University’s planned activities in the lead-up to COP31 in 2026, including further research collaboration, policy engagement and capacity-building initiatives.
