Given the contemporary interest in rurality and nature, Dr Fernandes proposes to examine these topics in the context of Iberian literature, focusing specifically on recent narrative fiction by Portuguese and Spanish authors. Her analysis centres on the novels A Gorda (2016) and Um Cão no meio do Caminho (2022) by the Portuguese writer Isabela Figueiredo (b. 1963), and Cara de pan [translated into English as Among the Hedges] (2018) and Un amor (2020) by the Spanish writer Sara Mesa (b. 1976).

She will first consider the relationship between nature and rurality, suggesting that natural or rural spaces can also be found within urban landscapes and on the outskirts of cities. The rural is not always synonymous with the countryside, and she will argue that the works of Figueiredo and Mesa highlight the rurality of gardens, parks, or pieces of empty land. She will then explore the nuanced significance of natural and rural spaces as meaningful elements in the narratives: these settings function as refuges and hiding places, while also offering possible sites of authenticity and hope.
