With roots in services provision, co-production is an approach increasingly applied in disaster risk reduction and sustainable development, with the goal of increasing resilience and adaptation at the local level. Co-production aims to bring diverse stakeholders together in a ‘dialogue of knowledges’ (e.g., community representatives/leaders, government representatives, technical experts, NGOs, academics), to identify local challenges and priorities, and negotiate and agree on acceptable and sustainable solutions. Key aspect of co-production include valuing local and traditional knowledge on a par with technical or scientific knowledge, increasing inclusivity and well-being, and reducing disaster impacts. Co-production also aims to connect local actions with existing government plans and programmes. In this seminar, I will review the theoretical basis underpinning this approach, and describe some recent experiences related to water, climate change and urbanisation, from Mexico City and Puebla, Mexico.
