[12/25] Professor Fausto Guzzetti delivered a keynote on Capabilities and Challenges of Landslide Anticipation at the international seminar “Unearthing the Past, Shaping the Future” organized by the Geological Survey of India
To mark its 175th anniversary, the Geological Survey of India hosted the international seminar “Unearthing the Past, Shaping the Future” in Jaipur on 20–21 November 2025. The event brought together leading scientists from around the world to discuss advances in the geosciences and their relevance to contemporary societal and environmental challenges.
Professor Fausto Guzzetti (IHRR) delivered a keynote lecture on “Capabilities and Challenges of Landslide Anticipation” presenting recent developments in landslide forecasting, hazard assessment, and the use of emerging technologies for risk reduction. Two other UK scientists contributed keynote presentations. Dr Kathryn Goodenough, Principal Geologist at the British Geological Survey, spoke on “Critical Minerals for the Energy Transition: The Role of Geological Surveys”, and Professor Yani Najman (Lancaster University), an expert in tectonics and sedimentary archives, discussed how sedimentary records can be used to reconstruct the evolution of the Himalaya.
The seminar featured several others keynote speakers, including:
Professor Subimal Ghosh, a leading authority in hydrology and hydroclimatology (Indian Institute of Technology Bombay)
Professor Emmanuel John Carranza, a specialist in mineral exploration geochemistry and mineral prospectivity modelling (University of the Free State, South Africa)
Professor Mrinal K. Sen, an expert in seismic wave propagation, anisotropy, and geophysical inverse problems (University of Texas at Austin, USA)
Dr James Hein, Geologist Emeritus with the United States Geological Survey and a pioneering researcher in marine mineral resources
Dr Geoff Fraser, an expert in geochronology and isotopic tracer datasets (Geoscience Australia) and Professor Jeffrey Wilson Mantilla, a leading authority in vertebrate palaeontology and sauropod evolution (University of Michigan, USA).
The seminar highlighted both historical achievements and future priorities for the geological sciences, underscoring the vital role of geoscience research in supporting sustainable development and societal resilience.
