Ellen & Ashutosh Youtube March 2026

[03/26] The Institute of Hazard, Risk & Resilience (IHRR) is pleased to share a new video highlighting an exciting international research collaboration focused on improving road safety and resilience across the Himalayan region.

Created by Dr Ellen Robson, former Postdoctoral Research Associate at IHRR and now Senior Lecturer in Engineering Geology in the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand), and Dr Ashutosh Kumar, Visiting Fellow at IHRR and Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi. The film captures the challenges faced by communities living and travelling within one of the world’s most hazard‑prone mountain environments. Steep terrain, active landslide zones, seismic activity and climate‑driven changes all contribute to heightened risk—making safe, reliable transport routes essential for daily life.

The video offers an accessible look at how researchers are working with local partners to better understand these risks and identify ways to strengthen Himalayan road networks. Through field investigations, on‑the‑ground data collection and interdisciplinary collaboration, the project demonstrates how research and community engagement can combine to inform practical, real‑world improvements.

This work underscores the central role of international partnerships in addressing complex global challenges. It also reflects IHRR’s ongoing commitment to research that supports safer, more resilient futures for communities around the world.
