A message from Ritwika Basum, Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) student, who recently completed her PhD
I am delighted to announce that I have successfully completed my PhD in Human Geography at Durham University, generously supported by the Christopher Moyes Studentship. My research explored the intersections of climate-resilient urbanism and labour regimes amid solidifying strains of ethnonationalism in spatial politics. Focused on Surat, Gujarat’s second-largest industrial urban region, this work offers insights into the complex interplay between an emergent climate-resilient urbanism and racialized labour mobilities in climate changed southern cities. I’m thrilled to bring these insights forward into new avenues.
A heartfelt thank you to my amazing supervisors, Professor Colin McFarlane and Professor Andrew Baldwin, for their unwavering support, and to my examiners for their invaluable insights.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue pushing boundaries in critical climate studies, diving into new collaborations, writing projects, and teaching opportunities. Here’s to many more adventures ahead and thank you to everyone who supported me along the way!
