Books on shelves

IBRU: Durham University’s Centre for Borders Research has provided five bursaries for Durham University staff to develop research initiatives that align with IBRU's mission.

Proposals were selected based on three criteria; Alignment with IBRU’s focus on borders, cross-border movements, and border regions; Intellectual merit, practical impacts, and feasibility of the proposed research activity; Contribution to developing border-research infrastructure at Durham.

Successful candidates for the IBRU research bursaries in 2026 are:

  • Léonie Newhouse (Geography): ‘Negotiating borders after aid ends’
  • Christopher Bahl (History) & Shamira Meghani (English) [with Nawal Watali (Geography), Samuel Hoyle (History), and Avarna Ojha (History)]: 'Renegotiating borders in and beyond South Asia: Histories, geographies, and practice’
  • Millicent McCreath (Law): ‘Seabed borders’
  • Jack Jenkins (Anthropology) & Kate Hampshire (Anthropology): ‘West Africa scoping visit’
  • Lauren Martin (Geography) [with Cécile Blouin (Geography) & Chi-Chi Shi (Geography)]: ‘Intimate ties, mobile mothers, and the problem of freedom in border studies’

IBRU looks forward to reporting of the successful outcomes of the research bursaries in the next edition of Borderlines.
