Congratulations to Georgia Punton on her new Addison Wheeler Research Fellowship in our Institute for Medical Humanities and Department of Psychology.

Georgia's research project, ‘The Imagination After Midnight’, investigates what happens in the imagination during nocturnal wakefulness, when we are awake at times when our bodies are primed for sleep. It builds on her doctoral research into sleep and cognitive control and her subsequent work with ReaderBank, exploring the diversity of imagination through reading.

Working with communities, creatives, and clinicians, Georgia will explore the thoughts, mental images, and other inner activities that accompany wakefulness at night, and how these experiences relate to sleep and wellbeing. In collaboration with South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle’s Recovery College Collective, the research will centre the perspectives of people with lived experience of disrupted sleep, incorporating creative methods and novel methodological approaches. Combining approaches from psychology and the medical humanities, the project aims to deepen understanding of nocturnal imagination and inform ways to help people manage difficult night-time thoughts, sleep better, and feel better during the day.
