Headshot of Johanna Thren

A warm welcome to Johanna Thren, who joins the Discovery Research Platform and Institute for Medical Humanities as a Creative Facilitation Specialist within our Creative Facilitation Unit led by Mary Robson.

Following the completion of her PhD in Anthropology, Johanna was working as a postdoc on the Reimagining Governance for a Flourishing Research Culture Project at Durham University, evaluating the delivery of inward-facing ethnographic research. The Institute for Medical Humanities (IMH) was one of the project’s research sites. As part of this work, Johanna facilitated a series of workshops to co-produce recommendations based on the project’s findings. Additionally, Johanna has facilitated workshops around Dementia care, supported the young person engagement work at the RVI in Newcastle, and delivered a series of early career researcher support events.

Johanna will initially be contributing to the development of a community of practice for creative facilitation. Additionally, she will co-facilitate some of the many exciting events and training courses coming up in the next few months. Johanna is looking forward to developing her practice by engaging with the rich collection of materials in the CFU to produce a digitised chronicle of the methods and wide-ranging impacts of the unit.

As a fellow of IMH, Johanna brings a broader academic interest in experiences of grief and loss, health communication and engagement work, organ donation, and the narratives influencing (auto-)ontologies of the body in different settings. Beyond this, she is enthusiastic about the exciting work colleagues at the institute are doing and is looking forward to contributing her facilitation,  ethnographic research and evaluation skills.

We look forward to working with you, Johanna – congratulations on your new role!
