Professor Willian Hamlin

(1 November - 15 December 2026)

William Hamlin is Professor Emeritus of English at Washington State University, having retired in June 2024 after forty years of teaching. A recipient of research fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Huntington Library, the Renaissance Society of America, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, he is the author of four books, among them Montaigne’s English Journey: Reading the Essays in Shakespeare’s Day (Oxford, 2013) and Montaigne: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford, 2020). More recently he is the coeditor, with Professors Lars Engle and Patrick Gray, of Shakespeare and Montaigne (Edinburgh, 2022).

At Durham, he plans to work on a new edition of John Florio’s 1603 English translation of Montaigne’s Essays — a project on which he is collaborating with Professor Warren Boutcher of Queen Mary, University of London, and which will be published as part of Oxford’s World’s Classics Series.
