Team Pigment
A collaboration between Chemistry and History, ‘Team Pigment’ was founded in 2013 in the context of the exhibition ‘Lindisfarne Gospels Durham’ to analyses by non-destructive means the inks and pigments used in early Northumbrian manuscripts. Drawing on that experience to devise a suite of mobile equipment customised for pigment investigation, the team has gone on to examine the pigments from other areas and periods, ranging from late Antiquity to the fifteenth century. With the support of a major grant from the AHRC, and in collaboration with colleagues at Northumbria and Cambridge, the team is currently undertaking the first-ever scientific survey of British illuminators’ pigments as a whole.
