25 November 2026 - 25 November 2026
4:00PM - 6:00PM
Room 417, Sandyford Building, Northumbria University
FREE
Hosted by Northumbria University. Co-hosted by the Music, Sound and Performance Research Group and the UKRI Global Music Technologies team in collaboration with CNCS, this event uses a team card game to ask what would have happened if the piano had never become a fixture of the nineteenth-century home.
Teams will argue for different causes of the piano’s failure, from credit and empire to rival technologies and gender, and defend their scenarios against complications dealt during play. No knowledge of music is needed: we’re keen to bring together historians, literary scholars and musicians, whatever their specialism. General audience members are also welcome to attend.
Teams and scenarios will be circulated in advance.
Note that this is an experimental event and we cannot guarantee that it will be a success. As such, refreshments will be provided as anticipatory compensation.
