Biography
I am a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of English Studies at Durham University, where I develop a project on the international transmission of mountaineering literature, titled TransAlpine.
I am a scholar of 20th- and 21st-century literature, translation, gender and environmental studies, with a specific focus on collaborative practices. I work on and in archives, adopting a range of methodologies (genetic translation studies and/or agent-oriented approaches in translation history and translator studies).
Before moving to Durham, I was Stipendiary Lecturer and Director of Studies in Italian at St Hilda's College, Oxford. I obtained my DPhil in 2024, and my thesis won IULM University’s 2024 dissertation award. This work forms the backbone of my first monograph, on Italian writers and their collaboration with English-language translators (under advanced review with OUP).
I have been invited to present my research at a wide range of international conferences and seminars (Sorbonne Université, University of Reading, ILCS London), and to deliver the opening lecture for the Environmental Humanities Research Cluster, University of Glasgow. My work has been supported by, among others, a Ragusa Foundation Fellowship (New York), an Everett Helm Fellowship (Lilly Library, Indiana), and a BA/Leverhulme Small Grant (University of Reading).
While at Oxford, I led the centenary commemoration of the 1924 British Everest expedition at Merton College. For that occasion, I organised a day-long symposium, inviting speakers (both climbers and academics) from the UK and overseas, and curated a special exhibition, Sandy Irvine: Everest 1924-2024, at Merton’s Old Library (and online).
My creative writing on mountains has appeared in Alpinist (issues 86, ‘A Longer Rope’, and 93, ‘The Mountain as Partner’) and is forthcoming in Desire Lines.
