Biography
Charlie is a PhD student in the Department of Biosciences at Durham University, supervised by Prof. Philip Stephens under the NETGAIN Doctoral Focal Award. Charlie is an interdisciplinary ecologist investigating deer management in Scotland. His research aims to find a middle ground: balancing deer management, ecological recovery, and traditional land use. Charlie holds an MSc in Environmental Protection and Management from the University of Edinburgh (School of Geosciences) and a BSc in Geography from Lancaster University (Lancaster Environment Centre). He has also studied at institutions including Michigan State University and Scotland's Rural College (SRUC). At SRUC, Charlie focused on land use conflicts, environmental monitoring, and stakeholder engagement, areas of research that he continues to develop at Durham University. His PhD is co-supervised by academics and practitioners from a range of institutions, including Dr Chris Sutherland (University of St Andrews, School of Mathematics and Statistics), Dr Flurina Wartmann (University of Aberdeen, School of Geosciences), and Willie Lamont (NatureScot).
