Aims

  • This module aims to develop students' skills and techniques for performing accurate and fluent consecutive interpretation between Chinese and English in various simulated settings through intensive training, rehearsal, and practice.

Content

  • Students will be guided to work on speeches in a range of genres, styles, and topics to develop core skills in consecutive interpreting, such as active listening, note-taking, memory retention, logical analysis, and reproduction.
  • Strategies for handling different speeds of delivery, accents, speech mannerisms, numbers, terminologies, and cultural-specific concepts will be drilled and discussed.
  • Students will be instructed to provide consecutive interpretation in various simulated settings and develop excellent public speaking and organisation skills, as well as coping mechanisms for stress management.
  • Guidelines for preparation, terminology research and management, ethics and professional conduct of interpreters will be provided.
  • Self-monitoring and self- and peer-evaluation techniques will also be covered.

Subject-specific Knowledge:

  • A comprehensive knowledge of the consecutive interpreting process, requirements, and settings.
  • A good knowledge of the key skills and strategies required for professional delivery of a consecutive interpreting task.
  • Working knowledge of consecutive interpreting in a wide range of topics, speech genres and styles and a critical understanding of self-monitoring, self-evaluation, and peer-evaluation techniques
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ethics and professional conduct of interpreters.
  • Familiarity with the key literature and Internet resources for interpreters.

Subject-specific Skills:

  • Ability to conduct search and preparation for consecutive interpreting tasks.
  • Ability to carry out consecutive interpreting tasks with accuracy, fluency, and confidence under pressure.
  • Ability to employ techniques and strategies selectively to perform consecutive interpreting in various simulated settings, paying particular attention to the use of language register and tone.
  • Ability to monitor personal delivery in the interpreting process and provide professional evaluation of own and peer interpretation.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • The module consists of 60 contact hours taught at the rate of three hours per week for 20 weeks
  • This module is taught as a combination of seminars and practicals.
  • Each week students will be given reading and/or practical tasks to prepare for the following week. They will also need to complete a weekly task related to what they have learned in each session.
  • The summative assessment has two components: an English-into-Chinese consecutive interpreting task (50%) and a Chinese-into-English consecutive interpreting task (50%). The pass mark is 50%.
