The comments made on social media that have been brought to our attention are abhorrent and wholly unacceptable. Durham University and all its Colleges take such matters very seriously. The University is taking swift and appropriate action within its powers.
We would like to be clear, this is not a Durham University or College account. We do not own it or manage it. It is independent. We have tried to make contact to express our deep concern. We condemn the message in the strongest possible terms. The post has now been removed from the account.
We do not tolerate racism, hate speech or prejudice. We condemn in the strongest possible terms any incidents of racism or targeting individuals or groups for their race or their religious, political or cultural beliefs.
We strongly urge any staff or students affected by any such incidents to report them to us via our Report + Support tool or, where appropriate, the police, so that they can be investigated.
We are a diverse, global community. We will continue to work collaboratively with staff, students and other stakeholders to foster a collegiate culture in which all members of the Durham University community feel respected and valued.
We always strive to provide a welcoming, safe and supportive community for all staff and students and to ensure they feel that they belong.
