Finding Confidence, Community and Opportunity

When Oliver arrived at Durham from Belfast, he brought with him a passion for history and politics, a love of canoeing, and a determination to make the most of every opportunity available to him.

Like many students, Oliver knew that university would come with financial challenges. After taking a gap year to work and save money, he was preparing for the reality that he would likely need to balance paid employment alongside his studies. He worried that financial pressures would limit how fully he could engage with university life and potentially restrict his future ambitions.

His scholarship changed that.

The scholarship gave Oliver the freedom to focus on his studies and immerse himself in the wider Durham experience. It removed much of the financial pressure that had weighed on him before arriving at university and allowed him to dedicate his time to both academic and personal development.

One of the most significant impacts has been his involvement in Canoe Polo. Returning to a sport he had previously enjoyed in Belfast, Oliver found not only a competitive outlet but also a community that helped him settle into life at Durham. From training sessions to national competitions, the scholarship made it possible for him to fully participate in opportunities that might otherwise have been out of reach.

The support has also helped Oliver look beyond his undergraduate degree. With the confidence and stability the scholarship has provided, he is now seriously considering postgraduate study and exploring future careers in academia and political research.

Reflecting on his experience, Oliver believes the scholarship has done more than ease financial concerns, it has expanded his sense of what is possible. It has given him the confidence to pursue his ambitions, embrace new opportunities, and make the most of his time at Durham.

For Oliver, opportunity means being able to follow your passions without unnecessary barriers standing in the way. Thanks to the generosity of alumni, that opportunity has become a reality.
