Defying the Odds: Sam's Journey to Durham

For Sam, coming to Durham was the culmination of a journey defined by determination, resilience and an unwavering belief in the power of education.

Growing up in County Durham, Sam faced significant challenges throughout her early education. After leaving school without completing her studies, she spent years navigating health issues, disability and barriers that often made higher education feel out of reach. Yet despite the setbacks, she never gave up on the idea of learning.

Following major surgery during the pandemic, Sam made a promise to herself: if she recovered, she would return to education. She enrolled at Darlington College, excelled in her studies, won multiple student awards and achieved the highest GCSE Maths grade ever recorded at the college.

But one challenge remained. Without access to student finance, university simply wasn't affordable.

A scholarship changed everything.

The scholarship provided the financial support Sam needed to take up her place at Durham and begin studying Computer Science. More than that, it gave her the opportunity to become a university student at all.

Since arriving at Durham, Sam has embraced every opportunity available to her. She has developed her passion for cybersecurity, travelled internationally through university opportunities, built professional networks, and inspired other Foundation students to pursue ambitions they may not have thought possible.

Today, Sam is focused on making the most of every opportunity that comes her way, whether through further study, research or a career in technology. Looking back, she sees the scholarship as the foundation that made all of those possibilities achievable.
