Have you ever looked at an ancient castle and wondered how it’s still standing? This exhibition will explore the history of construction and building conservation at Durham Castle, with a particular focus on the Norman Chapel Project, a long-term endeavour to preserve the oldest free-standing building in Durham.
The Norman Chapel, Durham Castle
Repair and Care: The Norman Chapel Project will feature newly excavated finds from the Norman Chapel works, including a medieval die and gaming pieces, interviews with staff who work tirelessly to preserve the Castle, and multiple interactive activities. There will be fun for the whole family!
The exhibition is the result of months of work by MA Museum and Artefact Studies students from the University of Durham. Repair and Care: The Norman Chapel Project will be open from the 24th May 2024, and will be accessible through Durham Castle tours.
Also watch out for our special curator led tours and Durham Castle open days over the summer!
