Join us on 12 October for an evening with award-winning British-Sudanese artist Asma Elbadawi, exploring creativity, identity and sport through poetry, visual art and conversation. The event takes place at the Lindisfarne Centre from 6:30–8:30 p.m. and is free to attend, with registration required.

To mark Black History Month, the BAME Network, St Aidan’s College and the School of Modern Languages and Cultures invite staff, students and members of the wider community to an evening with award-winning British-Sudanese artist, spoken-word poet and basketball player Asma Elbadawi.

Taking place on 12 October from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at the Lindisfarne Centre, the event will bring together poetry, visual art, conversation and sports activism, offering an opportunity to hear about Elbadawi’s creative work and her experiences at the intersection of sport, womanhood and identity.

An evening of poetry, art and conversation

The evening will open with a poetry and visual presentation by Asma Elbadawi, followed by a conversation with  Professor Abir Hamdar and a Q&A with the audience.

The programme will conclude with a reception and refreshments, providing an opportunity for attendees to continue the conversation informally.

The event is open to staff, students and the wider community across County Durham and beyond. Guests are very welcome to share the invitation with friends, colleagues and others who may be interested.

About Asma Elbadawi

Asma Elbadawi is an award-winning British-Sudanese spoken-word poet, visual artist and basketball player whose work explores dual heritage and the intersections of sport, womanhood and identity.

Her achievements include winning the British Muslim Awards and the British Journal of Photography’s Female in Focus x Nikon Award. She has also campaigned successfully for the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to lift its ban on religious headwear in professional basketball.

Elbadawi has performed and presented her work nationally and internationally, including at the Manchester and Bradford Literature Festivals, Iskarnival Festival in Malaysia, the European Arts Forum in Brussels and the African Women in Sports Conference in Botswana. Her work has also been featured by the BBC, CNN, Al-Jazeera and Channel 4.

Through her creative practice and advocacy, she continues to challenge stereotypes in sport and encourage young people from BAME backgrounds to pursue the sports they love.
