Wendy Powers
University College Principal and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Durham University
As Principal at University College, I serve as the University’s “Senior Responsible Officer” for the Norman Chapel Project.
I monitor the project closely and stay in touch with all partners involved – project managers, various contractors, college and university colleagues – to ensure the project stays on budget and on time (as close to on time as possible).
I Chair the Durham University Steering Group related to this project and liaise with Executive Dean Janet Stewart, our University Executive Council sponsor, when major decisions need to be made.
I feel confident I speak for all of us when I say it is an honour and privilege to be involved with this important project to conserve the Norman Chapel here at Durham Castle. This is the oldest building in the city – in 2022 we celebrated the 950th anniversary of the chapel’s beginnings – and these works to help it dry over the next 5 years are critical to the longer term preservation work that needs to be done. The project team is working well together and I’m impressed by not only the various partners’ skills, but also their passion for this particular heritage site.
