Dr Katalin Sulyok Awarded Prestigious Global Fellowship in International Law on Sustainable Development

The prestigious fellowship honours the legacy of the late Judge Christopher Gregory Weeramantry, former Vice-President of the International Court of Justice and a pioneering advocate for sustainable development through international law. Awarded through a highly competitive global process, the fellowship recognises outstanding scholars whose research advances international law in addressing the world's most pressing sustainability challenges. The 2026 award is particularly significant as it marks the 100th anniversary of Judge Weeramantry's birth and attracted more than 300 nominations from around the world.

During her two-year fellowship, Dr Sulyok will continue researching legal issues that resonate closely with Judge Weeramantry’s defining legacy for tackling the key planetary challenges of our times through the means of international law.

Her research will touch upon questions of operationalizing intergenerational equity as a guiding principle, understanding the cooperation obligation to prevent causing harm to the climate system, and studying the legal requirements of carbon markets to ensure their environmental integrity.

Dr Sulyok's fellowship recognises her growing international leadership in the field of international environmental and climate law.
