[06/26] Professor Bruce Malamud, IHRR Director, marked the 25th anniversary of the journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS) at the EGU General Assembly 2026 in Vienna.

At the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly in Vienna, Austria, on 4 May 2026, Professor Bruce Malamud presented a retrospective celebrating 25 years of the journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS), one of the leading international journals in natural hazards research.

The presentation reflected on NHESS’s development since its launch in 2001. What began with 15 papers in its first issue has grown into a major international journal supported by more than 50 editors and a global community of authors, reviewers, guest editors and readers.

The occasion also marked a personal milestone. Bruce stepped down in May 2026 after serving as an Executive Editor of NHESS since 2013.

The presentation highlighted the increasing importance of interdisciplinary approaches to understanding hazards, risks and resilience, reflecting the broad scope that has characterised NHESS throughout its history.
