[09/26] Professor Fausto Guzzetti will address GEOS 2026 in Oslo, linking advances in landslide forecasting with communication, trust, ethics, and decision-making for effective risk reduction.
Fausto Guzzetti, Professor of Hazard and Risk at Durham University’s Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR), will speak at the International Symposium on Climate-Driven Geohazards: Engineering, Science and Society (GEOS) in Oslo, Norway.
Organised by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute with international partners, GEOS takes place from 31 August to 2 September 2026. The symposium brings together researchers and practitioners to examine climate-driven geohazards across engineering, science and society, with sessions ranging from experiments and modelling to early warning, nature-based solutions, policy and education.
Professor Guzzetti will present From Forecasts to Action: A Personal Perspective on 2 September during the session on early-warning systems and non-structural risk reduction. His talk draws on decades of work on rainfall-induced landslides and the development of forecasting systems.
The first part of the presentation considers advances in landslide forecasting, including machine-learning approaches that combine multiple models and rainfall observations. The work shows how landslide occurrence can be predicted across timescales ranging from operational hourly forecasts to multi-decadal assessments within a common framework.
The second part asks what is needed to turn predictions into effective action. Professor Guzzetti will explore the challenges posed by uncertainty and the importance of early-warning systems, clear communication and public trust. His central message is that moving from forecasts to action is not only a scientific and technological challenge: it also depends on ethics, legislation, social context and political will.
The talk reflects IHRR’s commitment to connecting hazard science with decisions that help communities understand and reduce risk.
