Biography
Dan Lawrence is Professor of Archaeology and Director of the Durham Archaeology Informatics Laboratory. He has been a permanent staff member in the department since October 2015. He completed his PhD at Durham (2013) after studying at University College London and the University of Cambridge, and was a post-doctoral researcher on the ERC funded Persia and its Neighbours Project. He also spent a semester as a fellow at the Digital Institute for Archaeology in the Centre for Advanced Spatial Technology, University of Arkansas.
Research Interests
Dan's research focuses on the archaeology of Southwest and Central Asia during the Holocene and uses archaeological evidence to address fundamental questions about the development of human societies and their relevance to challenges facing the modern world.His work investigates how and why societies grow, become more complex, and develop enduring inequalities. He is particularly interested in the emergence of cities, states, and empires; long-term patterns of demographic and economic growth; the origins and consequences of inequality; and the ways in which human societies interact with and transform their environments.
A central theme of his research is the use of archaeology as a long-term laboratory for understanding social and environmental change. By examining thousands of years of human experience, archaeology provides unique evidence for understanding how societies respond to opportunities and constraints, why some social systems prove resilient while others fail, and how different pathways of development affect sustainability and human wellbeing.Much of his recent work focuses on the relationships between economic development, inequality, and sustainability. Building on earlier research into climate change and long-term human–environment interactions, he is increasingly interested in understanding how societies balance growth, resilience, and environmental impacts over the long term, and how archaeological perspectives can contribute to contemporary debates about sustainable development and social justice.
To address these questions, Dan combines archaeological survey, GIS, remote sensing, fieldwork, and computational approaches with large comparative datasets spanning thousands of years and vast geographical regions. He has directed and participated in projects across Southwest and Central Asia, including in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Oman, and Kazakhstan. His work makes extensive use of satellite imagery and archaeological data science to investigate long-term patterns of settlement, land use, and social change.He is also actively involved in cultural heritage research and management through projects such as Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA), contributing to the documentation, monitoring, and protection of archaeological landscapes and sites across the region.
