Two Durham researchers elected to Academia Europaea
We’re celebrating the news that two of our leading academics have been elected members of Academia Europaea in recognition of their subject-leading achievements.
Two leading academics
Professor Arlene Holmes-Henderson, in our Department of Classics and Ancient History, and Professor Harriet Bulkeley, from Department of Geography, have both been recognised by the prestigious pan-European academy.
Professor Holmes-Henderson is a leading expert in Classics education research and has undertaken extensive work to inform educational policy in the UK. She is currently leading a major multi-disciplinary project to help teachers improve the teaching of oracy skills in schools across North East England. In 2023 she was made an MBE by King Charles III for Services to Education.
Professor Bulkeley is expert on environmental politics and governance. Her work has a particular focus on climate change, biodiversity, energy and nature-based solutions. She has co-authored the UN-Habitat’s Guiding Principles for City Climate Action Planning and is an expert advisor to the UK Government and the European Commission. Her expertise is globally renowned, and she is one of the most highly cited researchers in her field.

The Academia Europaea is a prestigious pan-European academy of sciences, humanities and letters. Membership draws on all countries in Europe, bringing together a truly international body of expertise.
