About The Laboratory

The Durham Engineering XCT Laboratory gives researchers and industry partners across the region access to advanced X-ray Computed Tomography: non-destructive 3D imaging that reveals the full interior of an object without cutting it open. Our two systems span the full range of the technique, from large structural components down to features measured in fractions of a micron.

Established in 2013, the laboratory received a major refurbishment from 2024 onwards, funded by Durham University Strategic Equipment grants, the SRF Smart Soils, and the Reece Foundation. This significantly expanded its capabilities, and continuous upgrades to its instruments since then have kept it at the forefront of XCT technology.

We are one of two XCT facilities at Durham University, complementing the North East Material Culture Analytical Suite (NEMCAS) in the Department of Archaeology. Together the two facilities serve Durham's research community across engineering, science, and the humanities.

Looking beyond Durham, the laboratory aims to become the home of XCT for the North East of England, serving not only the University but universities, research institutions, and industry partners across the wider region. If you are based in the North East and looking for XCT capabilities, we want to hear from you.

The laboratory is located in room E-267 of the Higginson building of Engineering. To find out how to access the facility and apply for scan time, visit our Access and How to Apply page.
