In December 2025, it was announced that United Kingdom will associate to the Erasmus+ programme from 2027. Durham University is proud to maintain strong ties with Europe through European Partnerships and our membership of multiple consortia and networks including the: Arqus European University Alliance, Coimbra Group, North Sea University Partnership, University of the Arctic (UArctic) and others.
In preparation for reassociation, Durham University has successfully applied for and been awarded an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) (see: UKDURHAM01 - ECHE.pdf). This official accreditation, granted by the European Commission, will enable the University to participate in Erasmus+ mobility and cooperation projects from 1 January 2027. We look forward to working closely with our partners as we work towards reassociation and will update the following page to provide updates.
While welcoming the news on Erasmus+, the University remains committed to the UK Government's Turing funding scheme that is supporting Durham University students on worldwide Global Opportunities placements.
Durham has successfully applied and received a Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE). This accreditation will enable the University to participate in Erasmus+ mobility and cooperation projects from 1 January 2027.
Durham already has over 250+ agreements with European partners. The University will work with these to provide European exchange opportunities under the Erasmus+ programme.
From January 2027, Durham will be able to receive students and staffs from Erasmus+ partner universities and will be able to apply for funding to support exchanges from Durham. If funded, Durham will be able to fund some students and staff from September 2027. In the interim period, student exchanges will continue to be supported by the Turing Scheme.
UK reassociation with Erasmus+ is due to take place in 2027, with staff and students being exchanged from September 2027 onwards. At present if you you are at a European university and would like to come to Durham:

Turing funding will be discontinued by UK government, with it formally ending on 31 August 2027. The University has applied for an Erasmus+ Charter to use Erasmus+ to cover some of what was funded by Turing. However, under current Erasmus+ rules, only 20% of an Erasmus+ budget may be spent on non-Erasmus+ countries. This will have an impact on non-European activities - funding for these will be more limited and cannot be guaranteed.
