If selected to go on an exchange by Durham, the Global Opportunities Team will nominate you to the partner. After your nomination is confirmed, you will need to apply to the partner to register with them.
Deadline: Late March
Keio International Program (KIP)
This is a comprehensive program especially designed for exchange students from partner universities. In this program, students can study about Japan and East/Southeast Asia by taking English-taught courses offered by the International Centre. In addition, KIP students may choose to take up to four Japanese language courses each semester. KIP students with advanced Japanese proficiency may also take undergraduate/graduate school courses in Japanese offered by faculties open to exchange students.
English-taught courses list: AY 2026 List of International Center Courses
Students must register for a minimum of 7 courses per semester (14 courses per year). For more information, please visit Keio International Program(KIP) | Keio University International Center.
Students must be fluent in either Japanese or English and evidence of language proficiency is required.
Keio University makes a point of ensuring that its campuses are safe and that its students, faculty, and staff have access to facilities that keep them healthy and active. The Student Counseling Room offers consultations in English (face-to-face, telephone, and online counseling) for all students.
Keio offers some off-campus housing that is subsidized by the university. Exchange students have priority access to a room (but not guaranteed) in these housing arrangements if they complete housing application on time.
Keio assists students in arranging accommodation in Japan. Students are provided with a room at one of the student dormitories subsidized by Keio University. In some dormitories, weekday meals are included in the fee.

Taking utilities, food, clothes, transportation, books and miscellaneous expenses into consideration, monthly living costs will be approximately ¥130,000 - ¥170,000.
Keio University strongly suggests that incoming exchange students have enough funding to cover the expected costs of their stay at Keio, which should be at least JPY 130,000 (or equivalent in their country’s currency) per month for the expected period of stay. It is also difficult for exchange students to get a part-time job during their exchange period.
Keio run a Short-Term Japanese Studies Program (KJSP) through their International Center. Typically this takes place for two weeks in February each year. This programme is separate to the Durham non-European Exchange programme and as such students may apply independently and would have to self fund.
