ZEISS Certified Professional Course in Confocal Microscopy at Durham University

Comprehensive training in confocal microscopy techniques

Durham University is pleased to offer this specialist course in collaboration with ZEISS Academy Microscopy.

Dates: 12–13 February 2026

Cost: £1,100

Discover an innovative two-day confocal microscopy course at Durham University, combining cutting-edge Virtual Reality training with expert-led, hands-on experience.

The programme includes:

  • Four custom-designed Virtual Reality training modules,
  • Four interactive e-learning modules,
  • Hands-on sessions with Durham imaging specialists, and
  • Application-focused talks from field experts

This unique course delivers comprehensive theoretical and practical training in confocal microscopy using state-of-the-art learning methods. Participants will develop the essential skills needed to operate high-end confocal laser scanning microscopes with confidence and precision.

During practical sessions, participants will work directly with three of the latest ZEISS confocal microscopy systems:

  • ZEISS LSM 980 with Airyscan 2 (inverted)
  • ZEISS LSM 880 with Airyscan (inverted)
  • ZEISS LSM 800 with Airyscan (upright)

Jointly developed by ZEISS, Durham University and University of Glasgow imaging experts, the course combines technical excellence with engaging delivery. While ZEISS instruments are used to demonstrate the power of modern confocal microscopy, the core principles are presented in a system-agnostic way, ensuring participants can apply their knowledge across any confocal platform.

Course content and benefits

Immersive VR confocal training

Experience the first full VR confocal microscopy training course, a fully immersive learning platform that lets you explore the latest confocal technologies in ways not possible in real life. Across four interactive modules, you will examine system components, adjust settings in a risk-free environment, design multichannel and 3D volume experiments, practise live-cell imaging, and test your knowledge through gamified VR challenges. Expert feedback is provided throughout to support your learning.

Integrated e-Learning modules

The VR programme is complemented by four e-learning modules developed by specialists from Durham University and the ZEISS Academy Microscopy. These sessions expand on the VR learning objectives and guide you step-by-step through software setup, using interactive content, quizzes, and video demonstrations.

Hands-on training with ZEISS Systems

Gain practical experience on a suite of the latest ZEISS confocal microscopes, including the LSM 980 Airyscan 2, LSM 880 Airyscan, and LSM 800 Airyscan. Guided by experienced trainers, you’ll build on your VR and e-learning knowledge to develop real-world skills, optimise imaging workflows, and troubleshoot experiments. A diverse range of biological samples, from human cells and tissues to plant material, will be provided. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own samples for personalised advice and setup guidance.

Expert-led application talks

The course concludes with presentations introducing key confocal concepts and showcasing a variety of applications, case studies, and project examples to support your continued learning.

Participants are welcome from academia and industry across the UK, Europe, and beyond.

Learning objectives

  • Gain a strong foundation in both, the theoretical principles and practical operation of confocal microscopy.
  • Build the confidence to design and run confocal experiments, understanding how and why to choose the appropriate settings for successful imaging.
  • Learn to select the right tools, techniques, and workflows for a variety of experimental scenarios.
  • Understand how confocal microscopy is applied across a broad range of biological and scientific applications.
