Space to Explore Potential (STEP)

STEP is one of several access programmes designed to support talented students from less advantaged and underrepresented backgrounds who have the potential to succeed at Durham University. Together, these programmes address barriers to higher education experienced by students from a broad range of backgrounds and communities.

STEP is a residential programme specifically for Black heritage students from across England who meet our widening participation criteria, including those from neighbourhoods with historically low rates of progression to higher education. The programme is designed to support students who may face multiple barriers in accessing highly selective universities and to help ensure that academic potential is not limited by background or circumstance.

Five students playing spike ball, one is celebrating wile the others are laughing.

STEP offers year 12 Black heritage students the opportunity to visit our campus and experience what it is like to study at Durham. During the summer school, students stay in one of our colleges, take part in academic and social activities, and complete an assessed project in their chosen subject area. Participants develop their academic skills, gain insight into university life and may work towards a guaranteed alternative offer from Durham University.
