ECTS Guide for Incoming Erasmus+ / European Exchange Students

This is to support incoming Erasmus+ / European exchange students (and their home universities) transferring credit from their year abroad. If you are interested in applying for an exchange at Durham university, please visit: Incoming Opportunities.

UK - ECTS Context

The UK has not fully adopted ECTS. In the UK a full-time academic year is 120 UK credits which equates to 60 ECTS. Therefore: 2 UK credits - 1 ECTS credit.

Formative and Summative Assessments

In the course of each module students are asked to complete a certain amount of formative and summative assessment work:

  • Summative assessments are given periodically, are graded, and will count towards the final module mark.
  • Formative assessment is undertaken to measure the students’ progress and understanding of the material. It normally does not count towards the final module mark.

Full year students are likely to receive grades based on summative assessments. In the case of Erasmus+ students coming to Durham for less than a full academic year formative assessment work may be graded and counted towards the overall module mark.
