What is the Cosin’s Library Project?

Located on Palace Green at the heart of Durham City, Cosin’s Library is one of the oldest public libraries to survive in the North East. Originally based on Bishop Cosin’s collection of books, it has since grown, but is still largely found within the building constructed to hold this collection.

Following extensive conservation work, Cosin’s Library reopened in 2022. Arts Council England awarded funding to improve access to the Library and its collections to the wider public.

Audience impact

Through project funding, a range of audiences were engaged with the collection via online workshops, resources for school groups, adult learners and volunteers, and Cosin’s Library Fellowship posts, encouraging new research into the collection.
