World Heritage Site Day

What is World Heritage Site Day?

To celebrate World Heritage Site Day on 18 April 2022, Durham Cathedral and Durham University commissioned local artist Sofia Barton to develop free resources for eight local schools to create Lindisfarne Gospel’s inspired illuminated letters. Each letter was placed in the window of an independent shop in Durham City, creating a trail which spelt out the word HERITAGE for two weeks around World Heritage Site Day.

Durham’s World Heritage Site’s Youth Ambassadors also planned and hosted family activities focusing on the Lindisfarne Gospels. Visitors were able to view a facsimile copy of the Gospels, try their hand at writing with a quill, create a stained-glass window to take home and play some Anglo-Saxon board games!

Get involved

Although World Heritage Site Day 2022 is over, you can still download the resources created by artist Sofia Barton for free and create your own illuminated letter.
