Location
Collingwood is one of Durham’s ‘Hill colleges’ set just south of the city in a location that offers both space and immediate access to the university’s academic heart. The city centre and Elvet Riverside lecture theatres are within easy walking distance, while the Teaching and Learning Centre, the Bill Bryson Library and the Palatine Centre are all close at hand.
The college occupies one of the largest sites in Durham defined by its openness and greenery. Generous outdoor space runs through the grounds with mature trees, seasonal planting and plenty of seating, including the popular terrace outside the Stag’s Head where students gather from the first warm days of spring.
Recent investment, generously supported by our alumni community, has enhanced the landscape with well-considered outdoor areas that invite both activity and reflection. The result is a setting that feels expansive yet cohesive, lively yet calm.
Collingwood borders Durham’s Botanic Garden with direct access to it, extending this sense of space and tranquillity. For many students, it becomes a natural retreat: somewhere to walk, think and reset, just moments from their daily routines.
