Thanks to the generosity of alumnus Rory Lonergan (Economics & Politics, Collingwood College, 2018-21), we are delighted to announce the creation of brand-new scholarships for eligible first year undergraduates joining Collingwood College.
The Sports Road Scholarships will invite applications from students from low-income backgrounds with a strong track record of sporting achievement, and the potential to contribute significantly to Collingwood’s sporting success by competing at the highest levels within college sport, and/or at a University level.
The Sports Road Scholarships form part of Collingwood’s broader mission to enable students to fulfil their potential, in whatever domains are most meaningful to them. Alongside Collingwood’s range of donor-funded Student Opportunities Funds, the Sports Road Scholarships will help to remove barriers for students who might otherwise have to turn down experiences and opportunities that others take for granted, enabling them to experience the very best of what Collingwood and Durham have to offer.
Rory joins a large group of Collingwood alumni who support current students by making donations to our Student Opportunities Funds and various enrichment and internship programmes. Principal of Collingwood College, Professor Joe Elliott, said: “We are so grateful to Rory. To be so caring and thoughtful, having only recently completed a degree himself is truly exceptional. His generosity will surely help many future Collingwood students to fulfil their sporting potential. Rory was a star footballer at Durham, but his ongoing contribution to our community will transcend these achievements by aiding and transforming the lives of many future members of the Wood”
Further information about applications will be shared with incoming students prior to the academic year 2022-23.
