Reflecting our motto, Aime le Meilleur (Love the Best), Collingwood encourages you to be the best you can be at whatever interests you. Collingwood students are ambitious, get involved and make great things happen: from Art to Zorbing, there are more than 70 sports teams and over 20 societies and committees to join.
Your personal development is at our core and we’ll help you to seize rare, life-changing opportunities: apply to our unique research internships, ever-expanding list of global opportunities, or pitch for funding for your innovative ideas.
We have a range of outstanding facilities to support your student life and activities: make sure you check out our very own Mark Hillery Theatre and brand-new Music Recording Studios.
You are most welcome to visit Collingwood between 9.30am and 12.30pm on the Post-offer Visit Days. Our staff and students will be ready to greet you, give you a tour, and tell you all about Collingwood. We're very informal here at Collingwood - tours will set off as and when a group gathers and there is no need to book anything in advance.
We can't wait to welcome you to The Wood!
We're the largest College at Durham with a total of around 1800 students. 555 of those students live in College. Students are strongly encouraged to live-in for their first year. Second, third and fourth year students tend to live out in rented accommodation in town, but it is possible for some students to stay in College for more than one year, and many choose to live back in College for their final year. Livers out are still part of the College community and will regularly come to College to use the facilities and to socialise.
We are a fully catered College. Livers in receive 3 meals per day, 7 days a week. The menus are varied and our catering team are able to cater for all dietary needs. Corridors have small shared pantries containing a fridge, kettle, sink, toaster and microwave for snacks outside of meal times...but don't forget about our Toastie and Coffee Shop, The Wood'n'Spoon!
We don't wear gowns at Collingwood...Our formals are a mixture of black-tie or fancy dress! They happen 3 or 4 times a term, and are big, bold events where our community comes together to celebrate.
There are just 2 types of accommodation to choose from at Collingwood. Standard: a study bedroom with a sink, shared bathroom facilities (2 toilets and 2 showers between a floor of 10 people) 38-weeks lets which means you keep your room for the vacations. En-suite: study bedroom with private bathroom with shower. 30-week lets, meaning you'll have to move out over vacations (although you can store items in the underbed storage).
Our culture is informal and non-hierarchical. Collingwood is an energetic and modern College, and staff and students call each other by their first names. That's not to say we don't have traditions, of course... you'll often see energetic renditions of "Country Roads" at the end of a formal dinner!
Collingwood College is located on South Road in Durham, the postcode is DH1 3LT.
We are very close to the Botanic Garden, if you follow signs to the garden you can't miss us.
We strongly advise visitors to use public transport to travel to Durham.
Public car parks within walking distance of the city centre are:
(Please note there is a parking charge to use these carparks)
Public transport runs from the Park and Ride carparks into Durham city. One ticket must be purchased for each passenger (£2.00 per person) when using these facilities, and the bus must be used. Park and Ride sites close at 19:00 and vehicles will be locked in overnight if still on site at this time. We recommend arriving at the Park and Ride a minimum of one hour prior to your first session as roads may be congested. Park and Ride sites are operated by Durham County Council, for more information visit their website.
There is also limited paid street parking located on Elvet Hill Road which is only a short walk away.
We have very limited car parking on site due to current construction work, therefore no visitor parking will be available at Collingwood on the Post-offer Visit Days.
