May I, on behalf of everyone at Collingwood, congratulate you on your examination successes, your offer of a place at Durham, and, of course, your impending membership of our College.
It is hard to explain how important College life is to our students and staff. Collingwood's motto is "Love the Best" and your experiences here will help you to be the best you can be, given your own unique constellation of interests, talents and ambitions. For you personally, fulfilling your potential may involve going beyond the pursuit of academic excellence, to playing for a Collingwood second or third team (although in some sports this is still pretty stellar - we have, for example, sixteen men's and women's football teams and eight netball teams), participating in College drama productions, contributing to voluntary work in local or international community settings, taking advantage of internship and other professional opportunities, developing your skills in music, film, dance or art, or participating in student representation and governance.
Collingwood is often accurately described as "full-on" so I hope that you will all have enjoyed some rest and relaxation this summer. Please prepare yourself for a highly stimulating and enjoyable first year. I look forward to welcoming you to Durham and having you join us as a lifelong member of our community, known to all as "The Wood".
With all best wishes,
Joe Elliott
Principal of Collingwood College and Professor of Educational Psychology
